I talked about this before but current ebay auctions have brought this book back into the comic book zeitgeist – Wayward #1.
Wayward #1 sold just under 30,000 copies (29,240 to be exact) – which relatively speaking and compared to titled like East of West or Saga is very low. For a book that had ten covers the variants sell very well online, hitting around $10 each, however, one book that could be regarded as a type of ashcan is largely ignored. The Wayward #1 Japanese Manga Edition – Printed a little smaller than a magazine. This book was produced by Jim Zub (Wayward creator) for a Japanese comic book / Manga Convention 30 days prior to the Image release. This book was limited to 300 copies, 50 of which were brought and sold in North America. There are still stores in Japan that have this book available.
Recently Wayward issue #2 and #3 were also reprinted in this manga style in Japanese and made available, resulting in more issues being imported into North America. Recently a blue label CGC 9.8 sold at auction ending at $250! The label says the book reprints the book in Japanese, however, that is incorrect as this book came out before the image #1.
Now that this book is being imported by select retailers it is the time to start looking for them.
Also – Jim Zub linked this page on his facebook – a Japanese store with issues 1, 2 and 3 in stock and will ship to the United States. Just no one with a postal code. (1000 yen is equal to about $10 US dollars)
