Screen shot 2015-06-15 at 2.14.33 PM

Here are the summer movie updates!

First off is the hot off the presses Latino Review rumours that the Spider-Man “Iron Spider” suit would be an important part of the Captain America Civil War film plot line, with the film already releasing posters featuring main marvel characters facing off it wouldn’t be that big of a surprise for Spider-Man to have an important role in the film. So the book to look for is the first appearance of the Iron Spider. Amazing Spider-Man #529 – first appearance of the Iron Spider Suit.

Fox has announced the continuation of the X-Files franchise with the new season starting in January 2016. This with the relaunch of the comic book series with IDW has brought an increased interest back to the original Topps Comics X-Files series. The X-Files #1 first print Topps publication has been selling for upwards of $30 to $50. For a book that constantly sold for $10 to $20 in high grade condition this is great news. There are still findable copies in the wild for cover. This book has a lot of potential to explode come the series relaunch in January.

There has been a lot of casting news involving the CW and Agents of Shield TV-Shows. One more recent piece of news is the casting of the character Lash from the marvel universe into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Lash is a relativly newly developed character first being introduced in Inhuman #1 from 2014. Since this is a Marvel Now title with huge print runs the variants are the books to look for.

Another character meeting its TV-premier is Jesse Quick, being introduced in the Flash TV-Series new season. Jesse Quick previously Jesse Chambers first appears as Jesse Quick in Justice Society of America #1 – however her first appearance that has been largly ignored as Jesse Chambers the concept behind the character is Justice League Europe #34 – both of these books are ones to look for.

Week in Review August 26

hitlistNot a lot going on this week, as per usual we’ve hit a summer slump in comic book speculation so I’m going to give you three points and do a Hollywood round-up post in a few days.

IMG_0004
This week sees the release of Boom Studio’s Over the Garden Wall series, with the creators of the television series working on the actual comic. You can still buy the book for cover-price at almost all online retailers. There is also a one-shot that is very hard to find and had a low print run, it usually sells in the $30 range. Something I only found out this week was that Over The Garden Wall appeared in a comic book before! The sought after one-shot not only had a preview in Adventure Time #33 but it also had art pin-ups that were never reprinted in the Over the Garden Wall series. With too many covers to keep track of, this is a book to be looking for.

Something to Buy Now Online – Kanye West Variants

$_57 Hip Hop Family Tree #1 – This book (I spoke about it here) has sold out at diamond and first prints are selling above cover price. There are four variant covers all featuring a different rap star. Right now the Fantagraphics website still has the first print Cover A and the Kanye West website exclusive variant cover for cover price. Considering all the sales on ebay of the Kanye West cover are in the $10 to $15 range AND there is television optioning happening behind the scenes, this is a no-brainer.

Something to Think about: Blade

Screen shot 2015-08-28 at 12.45.09 AM Right now Marvel there is a lot of rumour talk surrounding Marvel’s new Blade series. Marvel is launching a new Blade comic series with a female Blade – bringing a female Blade into the marvel universe. This is in-line with the recent interviews that have come out with Wesley Snipes talking about coming back to the character, suggesting an older Blade. Short term, I’m not sure if there has been a female Blade before – long term, Tomb of Dracula #10, the first appearance of Blade if very undervalued at the moment. How long will that last?

Week in Review August 19 – Back on Track

Back from a longer then usual hiatus is my Week in Review for August 19.

This week sees the release of Black Mask’s highest page number first issue with 64 pages and a 6.99 price tag. This book and its three covers are already selling for $10 to $15 on ebay. This is not a book to be sleeping on. Cover B seems to have the most potential.

Another book that most retailers received today was the Invader Zim Retailer Thank You #1 (Possibly regarded as the RRP) featuring a cover by Avatar the Last Air-Bender co-creator Bryan Konietzko – a similar cover with a SDCC logo is also floating out there however this book is limited to 500 copies and was sent directly from Boom to retailers. Your LCS should have a copy. This book is selling for $30 to $60 and is a book to be looking for.

Big News came out this week about Fantagraphics first on-going series Hip Hop Family Tree (also debuting this week) from creator Ed Piskors facebook account.
Screen shot 2015-08-19 at 3.29.47 AMI’ve hinted at the importance of this book before but now it has been confirmed by Ed Piskor that he has sold the right of the Hip Hop family tree in a development deal. The book to look for is the 2014 Hip Hop Family Tree FCBD Fantagraphics comic. This book sells on ebay for around $15 in near mint condition – it is the first appearance of Hip Hop family tree being published before the Hip Hop Family Tree Volume One debut. If this TV happens, this book will explode.

Coming up Soon: The first action figure variant; its importance / sleeper status, more speculation, less hesitation.

Week in Review: August 7

Screen shot 2015-03-06 at 2.25.20 AM

Nothing big has happened in the last few weeks but there are a few pieces of small news surrounding hollywood comic book optioning that will fill this post.

Today bleedingcool wrote a post about Image’s series Oddly Normal, announcing it had been optioned for an animated TV-Show. Oddly Normal was originally printed by Viper Comics before a hiatus and a Image Comics relaunch, making the VIPER Comics series the one to look for. Prices are kind of all over the place on ebay for the Viper series, but it should still be reasonably priced in the wild. Oddly Normal #1 from Viper Comics is the clear winner. (I did talk about this book previously here)

Anther book that had hollywood movement is Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. This week Sony pictures announced a January 13, 2017 intended release date for the upcoming Marvel Comics adaption. The Dark Tower is a popular series of Stephen King books that were adapted and a prequel with creative direction from King were released by Marvel Comics in 2007, followed by numerous compilations and follow-up stories. The book to look for is the first book Stephen King’s Dark Tower The Gunslinger’s Born #1. This book has a few variants and the one to look for, which can still be found for fairly reasonable prices is the Book Market RRP Variant cover. This particular variant  had 500 – 1000 copies released. This book has a lot of moving room – but the one to look for is Stephen King’s Dark Tower The Gunslinger’s Born #1, first print or variant covers, with the Book Market RRP being the clear winner.

The last piece of comic related news to come out this week is about the recent Gambit castings. There has been some weird rumours surrounding Channing Tatum accepting the role long term or only appearing briefly as the character but as it currently stands Channing Tatum is set to play Gambit in the upcoming X-Men film AND have a spin-off “Gambit – origin” film. Right now there are casting calls to fill a Belladonna character. Bella Donna Boudreaux first appeared in the Marvel universe In X-Men #8 (1990). She was a love interest / ally in the comics so i’m sure that will be her role in the film. Her first appearance can be found in dollar bins and is currently very undervalued but that is sure to change as more news comes out about the Gambit film. This is a book to be looking for and holding onto.
