Hollyweird: April Edition

This week it was announced that Hulu has ordered a pilot for a Locke and Key series. Most articles about this say that there was a “very competitive” bidding war. Which seems unlikely considering there was no interest in the series after FOX ordered a pilot and decided not to move forward after filming was completed in 2011. Locke and Key #1 seems to be the book people are looking for.

It was announced this week that Sony was making a live action movie about He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This is sure to bring more attention to DC Comics Presents #47 – the first appearance of He-Man in comics.

Joe Benitez creator of Lady Mechanika took to facebook this week to announce his Lady Mechanika creator owned series had been optioned for a television series. Lady Mechanika has been a popular indie series upon release, since this news broke there has been a lot of interest in the series first issue Lady Mechanika #0 and its various printings and variants. Something that has been largely ignored is that Lady Mechanika first appeared in a pin-up piece by Joe Benitez in Worlds of Aspen FCBD 2010. This book could see a lot of interest if the television series ever comes to fruition.

It was also confirmed this week that Adam Warlock would be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Week in Review April 25

I’m going to do a post about the things I missed last week tomorrow, so be on the look out for that.

At C2E2 Over the weekend it was announced that Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s Revival is being adapted into a film by Shattlerglass Films. A Teaser was shown. As a result Revival #1s have started to sell again! Two things to keep note of, the Revival #1 Sketch edition only has 500 copies and is a great book to be looking for and holding on to, The first appearance of Revival is Image 2012 Free Comic Book Day Edition book.

Skybound / Image Comics released THREE retailer appreciation books this week that you should be asking your retailer about. The first is the Kill the Minotaur Ashcan. This is a one per store ashcan and is the first published appearance of this series and characters, its a very large book that reprints the entire issue in black and white in the ashcan size.

The other two books Image released are reprints of Redneck #1, one is the Black and White Cover A with Silver Foil Logo and the other is a Cover A with Gold Foil logo. While these books together have sold online in presale for up to $250, these books are currently selling for $40 each. Since these books are given to every store with a diamond account that ordered the book there will be a lot of copies out there this week.

If you want to speculate on Redneck the book you should be buying is the ashcan. This book came out before issue #1 and is the TRUE first appearance of the series and characters – this book can be purchased on ebay for $40 to $50, which is a steal when you consider the high price sales of the gold and silver foil variants.

Another book to be on the lookout for tomorrow is ‘Namwolf #1. Springing from the success of Hillbilly, ‘Namwolf is another series published by Eric Powell’s Albatross Legacy Books, this book has two covers and both covers have multiple sales above cover. There is no ratio variant just a cover A and B.

Word?!? Redneck #1

It seems these last few months Image has been on a roll with its new titles. This week sees the release of Redneck #1 from the Image imprint Skybound Comics. This book has sold out at the distributor and is already selling for $10 to $15 online. This series is the second Image series from God Country writer Donny Cates so this book should not have been under ordered. There is also an ashcan variant for Redneck that came out a few weeks ago. Average sale for the ashcan last week $15 to $20 – average sale this week $35 to $40. Definitely a book to be looking for this week.

A book that came out last week that you should be looking for is Godshaper #1. Godshaper #1 had three covers, A,B and an Unlocked bonus cover. An unlocked bonus cover is what Boom calls qualifier variants where a retailer has to order a certain amount of cover A to order as many copies as they want of the unlocked cover. The unlocked cover for Godshaper #1 features artwork by David Aja and is selling online for $10.

POST 400?!?!

Can you believe this is my 400th post on Comicbookscalping? Its true.

In my last post I forgot to mention that New Warriors has been green lit for a 10 episode Television series by Freeform (previously ABC Family Channel). The series runners have already announced that Squirrel Girl will be a main character in the series. Since this announcement, Squirrel Girl a recent fan favorite, has seen a large splurge in popularity on the secondary market. Her first appearance is still obtainable and depending on how this show develops could be a great book to be holding on to. Marvel Super-Heroes V2 #8 Winter Special.

Two books that come out this week that you should be looking for

Rose #1 comes out tomorrow from Image comics and with this release comes the one-per store Rose #1 Gold Foil Variant. This is a book to be asking your Local Comic Book Store about.

Heathen #3 from Vault Comics comes out this week. Like its previous issues Heathen #3 has already sold out at the distributor and is selling well online. The online sales of the cover A of Heathen #3 for sold copies today range from $17 to $35. Definitely a book to be looking for this week.

Week in Review April 10

An Italian twitter account tweeted out last Thursday that Sylvester Stallone will be playing Starhawk in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. They also provided screen shots of an Italian press release “proving” the claim. This has resulted in Starhawk’s first and second appearance to heat up online. Starhawks first appearance is Defenders #27 from 1975. This is regarded as a cameo appearance – however, Starhawk appears throughout the book and this is a very large cameo. Starhawks FULL first appearance and first appearance on a cover is Defenders #28. Both books have heated up considerably – but these books are still at obtainable prices in the wild.

Another book to look for is the recent Marvel event book X-Men Gold #1. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this book this week due to the artist adding hidden political and religious messages within the book. (Read more about that here) – This book has started selling for $10 to $15 on ebay. This book has not been recalled – but it is definitely a book to be looking for. (the variants are also performing well)

Gold_Custom
As promised here is a break down of the characters in the Invincible that could show up in the Invincible movie.

Amber Bennett – Ex-Girlfriend of Invincible. She is featured prominently in the first few arcs of the Invincible comic series. First appearance Invincible #8.
Guardians of the Globe – Pretty much the Justice League of the Invincible Universe. The movie should be featuring this organization in some incarnation so the likely hood of these characters appearing in the film are very high.
Robot – Turns out of be kind of like a side-kick to Invincible – First appearance Invincible #2
Red Splode – Invincible #2
Dupli-Kate – Invincible #2
Allen – Invincible #5
Black Samson – Invincible #6
The Immortal – Invincible #7
Cecil Steadman – Head of Global Defense Agency – and Guardians of the Globe – First appearance –  Brit: Cold Breath
A few other characters that could appear are Anissa, D.A. Sinclair and Omni Boy. Anissa’s first appearance is Invincible #44 she plays a big role in the Invincible story line. D.A. Sinclair’s first appearance is Invincible #20 – he is a scientist / genius that creates killing machines to destroy Invincible. Omni Boy / Oliver Grayson – is Invincibles brother. He first appears in Invincible #26.

Did I miss a character? Let me know in the comments!

Week in Review: April 4

Today news came out that the Robert Kirkman Image Comics series Invincible was being adapted into a film by Seth Rogan and his writing partner Evan Goldberg. As a result of this news Invincible #1s have been selling like hot cakes but there are a few other books you should also be looking for .

Invincible #1 first appeared as a preview in three Image Comics titles, Savage Dragon #102, Masters of the Universe #1 and Tech Jacket #1. While there has been debate about which preview was published first making it the first appearance it all comes down to release dates. Tech Jacket #1 was released in late October, Masters of the Universe #1 was released in November, Savage Dragon #102 had a planned release date of August but was delayed and came out in December as shown on the Diamond Website under Shipping This Week: December 4. The First appearance of Invincible is in the preview in the back of Tech Jacket #1. This is the book you should be looking for.

Thank you Joshua Cozine for the correction.
A previous version of this article stated Savage Dragon #102 was the first appearance of Invincible #1. I was wrong and apologize for this error. All complaints made in the comic section will be responded to.

There are other books to look for in the Invincible run that include first appearances of key characters and I plan on doing a follow-up post with some of that information.

There were two pieces of news that came out last week that I would like to talk about .

News came out last week that Joss Whedon will be directing a Batgirl movie for Warner Brothers. Since this news broke the one book that seems to be steadily selling online is  Batgirl #1 from 2011. This book (and all of its printings) seems to be constantly selling for $20. The first print Adam Hughes cover could be a book to be holding onto as this project starts to develop and more news (like castings) starts coming out.

Screen Shot 2017-04-04 at 8.49.57 PM
Another thing to come out of the comic spectrum this week was Greg Rucka selling the movie rights of his new Image title, The Old Guard, to a production studio. This has resulted in the first print of The Old Guard #1 to sell for $10 online. There was also a one per store Gold Foil Logo cover released that has started to sell for $30 which is up $20 from before the news broke.
