Hollywood Daze: RICK REMENDER (AND MORE)

Yesterday Rick Remender tweeted that one of his comics was about to be announced as being in development as a film. Today news came out that the film would be based on the Radical Publishing, The Last Days of American Crime comic series. The Last Days of American Crime’s first issue came out in December of 2009. There is also an ashcan preview of The Last Days of American Crime that was sent to retailers in October of 2009 – making it the first appearance of the series.

Another comic that was optioned this week is Greg Rucka’s The Old Guard. The Old Guard is being developed as a film by Skydance Media. The Old Guard #1 has a few variants including three 25th Anniversary Image variants, an Emerald City Comic Con Variant limited to 500 and a one per store Gold Foil variant. Before issue #1 was released, The Old Guard was previewed inside of Image+1 magazine.

Another announcement that came out this week was that Locke and Key had been green lit by netflix as a full serialized series.

Week in Review: July 25

I went very spoiler heavy in this post. This is your one and only spoiler warning.

In this weeks issue of Venom,(Venom #4) it is reveled that the Symbiote god – first appearing in the previous issue was actually introduced in the marvel universe in 2012 in the Jason Aaron God of Thunder Thor series. Venom #4 has references panels that refer back to events from God of Thunder: Thor #6. Almost every copy of God of Thunder Thor #6 has disappeared from online marketplaces with the only listings on ebay being no reserve auctions. God of Thunder : Thor #6 is a book to be looking for – but it very well may not be the first appearance of this character – who very likely appears earlier in the run. It is not clear if the God of the Symbiote character and Gorr are one in the same. Something else to keep in mind – This news kills any speculation future Venom #3 might have had.

Something to think about: Pictures above  is the sword Gorr wields in The Jason Aaron God of Thunder Thor run. Seems like its very likely he is the god of the symbiotes – first appearance is Thor God of Thunder #2.

Infinity Wars: Prime #1 features the first appearance of a new character on the cover and inside the issue. This new character, Requiem, seems to be an established Marvel character taking on a new role. In this issue, Requiem is able to slay Thanos, cutting his head off. While the regular covers have no recorded sales above cover the 1:25 ratio variant has been selling well online and seems to be trending upwards. This would be a good book to be holding onto.

Another book that comes out this week is Teen Titans #20. The speculation train started on this book when DC announced it would be the first appearance of Lobo’s daughter Crush when retailers could still order it. While this book does have a larger print run the 1:25 ratio variant cover has been selling for $50 to $60.

One last book to look for is the Natali Sanders Cover D for Barbella #8. This book has been selling for $6 to $10.

Hollywood Daze: Mark Millar / Netflix

Today Netflix announced there plans for the Millarworld universe. While there has been a lot of speculation on what Mark Millar properties Netflix would tackle first, they announced five projects based on Millar’s comics with one of the comics not being published yet. The four projects based on already published books are all books you should be looking for – but keep in mind that Mark Millar has a very large following, all of these books have very large print runs and all of these books were published after Millar was a very well known name in comics.

Empress – Netflix plans on making an Empress movie based on Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen‘s 2016 Image comic by the same name. This book has seven regular first print covers and none of them seem to be selling above cover, However, the 1 in 200 Empress #1 Stuart Immonen sketch variant will start to see a lot of attention.

Huck – Huck is also being developed by Netflix as a full length feature film. Huck #1 has two covers a regular cover and a movie poster homage cover B.

Jupiter’s Legacy – Jupiter’s Legacy is being developed as a Netflix TV series. Jupiter’s Legacy #1 has a 1 in 25 ratio variant which is one of the reasons it has such a high print run. The 1 in 25 variant would be the book to buy if you want to speculate on this series.

American Jesus – After a half of a dozen announcements involving American Jesus it seems this project will finally see the light of day as a television series. American Jesus is the oldest title in the Millerworld being developed, originally published by Dark Horse under the name Chosen in 2004. Chosen #1 has been selling for $8 to $10.

The calm before SDCC: Superior Octopus #1

Yesterday marvel released a teaser for one of there SDCC panels where they released a promotional image for an upcoming Superior Octopus series. Marvel did not give a lot of information about what this series is about.  The Superior Spider-Man series from 2014 to 2015 featured a Peter Parker Spider-Man that had his body taken over by Otto Octavius AKA Doctor Octopus –  these two series are probably going to be connected.

The first appearance of Otto Octavius becoming the Superior Octopus is in 2017’s Amazing Spider-Man #25 (volume 4). Like all spider-man books this has a very high print run but as the first appearance of Silk has demonstrated – there is still a large group of people who have no problem buying back issue key spider-man issues at a premium. There are also several ratio variants for this book including a 1:1000 variant.

This is a book to start digging for.

Hollywood Daze: Prophet

Today the Hollywood Reporter came out with an article stating Rob Liefeld would be working in collaboration with Studio 8 to make a film based on his Image comic book series, Prophet. Studio 8 has some incredible films being released this year including the highly anticipated White Boy Rick film, staring Matthew Mcconaughey, about the youngest FBI undercover informant.

Prophet first appeared in the Image Series Youngblood – debuting in 1992 in the pages of Youngblood Volume 1 #2. This book has a very large print run. Prophet had his own series published by Image that came out in 1993. The first appearance of Prophet has been flying off ebay – it has been selling for $3 to $5.

12

After a 12 year hiatus, Rob Liefeld allowed Brandon Graham and Simon Roy to relaunch the Prophet series through Image continuing the legacy numbering. Prophet #21 was released in 2012 as a new direction and ran for 24 issues. Prophet #21 was a surprise success catching most retailers off guard resulting in it having a relatively low print run. First prints of Prophet #21 have always sold well – today selling for $20 to $30. Second prints of Prophet #21 have also sold for a premium.

Since Youngblood #2 has such a high print run the books that should see the largest increase in growth should be from the Simon Roy / Brandon Graham run. These books have low print runs and completely changed the way people thought about the Prophet character.
