Black Mask took the comic market by storm in 2015 but over the past two years, for various reasons, many comic readers and speculators alike have given up on the publisher. That could be why no one is talking about this new book that came out this week. 4 Kids Walk into a Bank #4 came out this week and with it came reports of people finding a “1 Kid Walks into a Bank” variant cover.
When someone posted an image of the cover on the 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank facebook page, the page gave a “no comment” response. We don’t know how many of these books were distributed or how a store qualified to receive copies – but we do know that this book exists and Black Mask doesn’t want to talk about it. Something to be looking for when you are at your Local Comic Book Shop!
Last week saw the release of Aftershock Comics, Pestilence #1. Pestilence sold out at the distributor on day of release, copies of the book have been selling for double to triple cover price – Copies of the standard cover is currently selling for around $8.
While the 1:10 variant cover is selling for $20 to $30 – both retailer variants – The Comic Mint and Eh! Variant seem to be selling like gangbusters on the secondary market.
Another Aftershock title that has been seeing a lot of attention is Baby Teeth. Baby teeth features art by Garry Brown and is written by Donny Cates. This book has had a lot of buzz based on the success of Donny Cates previous projects God Country and Redneck. Baby teeth is due for release on June 7 and will have the largest print run of any Aftershock title, its also set to have 5+ retailer variant covers. So why is this important? If retailer order and prerelease buzz are any indication, Baby Teeth is going to be big and when its released people are going to start trying to hunt down the first appearance of the title and its characters. The first appearance of Baby Teeth is the C2E2 Diamond Summit ashcan, distributed to retailers at the 2017 Diamond Summit in Chicago.
It was announced this week that Sony was making a live action movie about He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This is sure to bring more attention to DC Comics Presents #47 – the first appearance of He-Man in comics.
Joe Benitez creator of Lady Mechanika took to facebook this week to announce his Lady Mechanika creator owned series had been optioned for a television series. Lady Mechanika has been a popular indie series upon release, since this news broke there has been a lot of interest in the series first issue Lady Mechanika #0 and its various printings and variants. Something that has been largely ignored is that Lady Mechanika first appeared in a pin-up piece by Joe Benitez in Worlds of Aspen FCBD 2010. This book could see a lot of interest if the television series ever comes to fruition.
It was also confirmed this week that Adam Warlock would be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
I’m going to do a post about the things I missed last week tomorrow, so be on the look out for that.
At C2E2 Over the weekend it was announced that Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s Revival is being adapted into a film by Shattlerglass Films. A Teaser was shown. As a result Revival #1s have started to sell again! Two things to keep note of, the Revival #1 Sketch edition only has 500 copies and is a great book to be looking for and holding on to, The first appearance of Revival is Image 2012 Free Comic Book Day Edition book.
Skybound / Image Comics released THREE retailer appreciation books this week that you should be asking your retailer about. The first is the Kill the Minotaur Ashcan. This is a one per store ashcan and is the first published appearance of this series and characters, its a very large book that reprints the entire issue in black and white in the ashcan size.
The other two books Image released are reprints of Redneck #1, one is the Black and White Cover A with Silver Foil Logo and the other is a Cover A with Gold Foil logo. While these books together have sold online in presale for up to $250, these books are currently selling for $40 each. Since these books are given to every store with a diamond account that ordered the book there will be a lot of copies out there this week.
If you want to speculate on Redneck the book you should be buying is the ashcan. This book came out before issue #1 and is the TRUE first appearance of the series and characters – this book can be purchased on ebay for $40 to $50, which is a steal when you consider the high price sales of the gold and silver foil variants.
Another book to be on the lookout for tomorrow is ‘Namwolf #1. Springing from the success of Hillbilly, ‘Namwolf is another series published by Eric Powell’s Albatross Legacy Books, this book has two covers and both covers have multiple sales above cover. There is no ratio variant just a cover A and B.
Elektra #2 1:25 Adi Granov variant cover comes out this week and is preselling for $80 to $100 online. Second issues are typically under-ordered so this one could have strong legs for the next few weeks. Definitely a book to be asking your local comic book store about.
Bleedingcool did an article today about the new Wolverine character that is being teased by Marvel in the upcoming X-Men event. Marvel released the cover images of X-Men Blue #5 and #6 but blurred out the new Wolverine character. Bleedingcool is saying that this teased character is Jimmy Hudson – Wolverines son (Not Daken – Another son). This seems like the most likely scenario. This character first appeared in Ultimate X #1 from 2010. There are a few variants for this book but most covers are currently selling for under $10. This is a book to be looking for and holding onto until we find out who this character is.
Skybound Entertainment finally revealed the comic book that would be offered in the Second Megabox. I previously wrote about the Skybound Megabox here – its a Skybound themed loot crate. The second box ships out at the end of this month and features FOUR exclusive comic books. The First comic offered in this program is still selling for $40 and just today there was a sale for ONE of the comics in the second box that sold for $50! Here are the four exclusive comics – also included is a Vinyl figure (bloody or unbloody), a unannounced Mcfarlane studio toy AND MORE.
Catch-up Picks Totally Awesome Hulk #3 (2016)
WHY? Flying out of the pages of the Monsters Unleashed Volume 2 series, Kid Kaiju is getting his own series at Marvel. Kid Kaiju is an 11 year old child whose drawings manifest themselves. In Near Mint condition this book has flown off most online marketplaces, its not selling well raw but if the Kid Kaiju series does well this book will start to pick up. Also, CGC 9.8 copies of this book are selling north of $100.
New Avengers #8 (2013)
WHY? This was brought up by Comicsheatingup last week. New Avengers #8 is the first appearance of The Black Order. The Black Order is the name given to a group of Thanos’ Henchmen. The Black order have been confirmed to be appearing in the Avengers Infinity War film. This week this book has been selling for $10 to $18.
This is my first post of the year and there is really only one book this week that you should be looking for.
Underworld: Blood Wars is a graphic novel sized comic that came out this week from Darkstorm Comics. This book has already sold out at the distributor and is becoming harder and harder to find online. This book has a 50/50 cover and both covers are photo covers promoting the film of the same name that was released to theaters this week.
Cover A has already sold online for $20 while the Cover B “Variant Cover” has sold for $30.
If early film reviews of Underworld: Blood Wars says anything its that you should not be holding on to this book.
Here are a few things I should have talked about last week but didn’t.
love is love came out last week and immediately started selling for $40, this was of course before retailers realized they had received second printings. Due to printing error that has been reported by almost every speculation site except mine, Love is Love seconds prints shipped out before the first prints to North America retailers. The second print has cooled down and is currently selling for $20+ while the few copies of the first print that have hit stores are selling for $35 to $40.
This book is being totted as the first appearance of Harry Potter but its really just a pin-up that was approved by Harry Potter writer J.K. Rowling and CGC has decided not to indicate this book as the first appearance of Harry Potter on the comic book label.
Is there speculation value here? I would advice you to sell now and not hold onto this book. Long term this book is not going to be sought after.
Another book that has seen some interest is the new Saga comic book issue #41. This book due to a printing error where the book was printed too dark was recalled by the distributor and publisher. Now while this book is not currently selling well, this book will do well term in high grade CGC or CBCS copies. There is a market for recalled book, it just happens to be small.
This week saw the release of Atoll #1 – the second comic book about a predator shark in the last few weeks. (the other being White #1 from Devils Due). Atoll is written by Tim Daniel of Enormous and has sold out on diamond and almost all online retailers. Selling on ebay for $20 to $25. Atoll is published by Creative Mind Energy and could be at your local comic book store.
Another book that came out this week that you should be looking for is the high ratio variant of the new Transformers comic book Optimus Prime #1. The Optimus Prime #1 1:50 Paul Pope cover selling for $60 to $70. This is a book to be watching as transformers books are notorious for low print runs and have a large niche collecting market. This book should have long holding value.
The big comic book news that came out this week was that the Harley Quinn Suicide Squad spin-off film produced by and starring Margot Robbie would be titled Gotham City Sirens and featuring both Poison Ivy and Catwoman as Harley Quinn love interests.
The book Gotham City Sirens has exploded on ebay – raw copies of Gotham City Sirens #1 have sold for $50 to $90 with CGC 9.8 graded copies going for $190 to 250, with the J.G. Jones Variant $900 or best offer Buy it Now Auction selling just after the news broke – with the current lowest price copy sitting at $675. This is book that has always been pricey in comparison to other modern books however it can still be found in the wild for under ebay completed sale prices!
