Rags is the new indie hot book of 2018. Rags was originally published at the beginning of 2018 as a digital only comic and had a coinciding Patreon campaign offering monthly rewards. Some of the Patreon rewards include, posters, physical copies of the comic and exclusive Patreon variant covers. So what is the book about? Directly from the creators page “RAGS follows the misadventures of former USMC Combat Veteran Corperal Regina Ragowski, as she struggles to deal with her debilitating PTSD from her deployment and ouster from the MARINE CORPS as well as the continuing loss from those she loves. All during a zombie plague that has wrecked the liberal state of California.”
In July it was announced that Antarctic press had picked up Rags and would be publishing the book monthly. The first issue was released on September 12, 2018 and almost immediately became one of the hot books of the week. It is important to note that the original self-published version of Rags is “uncensored” while the Antarctic Press books have most of the books nudity covered up.
The first issue of the Antarctic Press edition of Rags also had a limited to 200 copy Virgin Variant cover – this book has been selling for $100 to $200 depending on its condition. The first print of this book is currently selling for $25 to $50 depending on its condition.
Only one copy of the patreon exclusive variant of the first issue has shown up on ebay since its release and it sold for $530. There was also a patreon exclusive physical copy released for the second issue of Rags featuring two covers, a “Normie Cover” and a “Bounty Hunter Variant” cover The “normie cover” has been selling for $70 to $80 while the Bounty Hunter Variant has had three sales ranging from $50 to $320.
Why is this important?
This week sees the release of the Antarctic Press edition of Rags #2. This book has already sold out at the distribution level and like with issue #1 – stores are going to find an unexpected amount of interest in this book. Some copies of the Antarctic Press edition were released at a recent comic book convention – these copies as well as copies selling in presale on ebay have been selling for $40 to $50. Like with the first issue – there is a special variant cover for the second issue that has been selling for $80 to $100.
This week – Rags #2 should be on your radar – this could very well be the book of the week.
Donald Trump has appeared in various comic books over the past 30 years and only a few of those appearances have been flattering. There is one in particular that I’d like to highlight – Heavy Metal Magazine Volume 14 issue #3 from July of 1990.
This book features a story based around Donald Trump running for Mayor of New York. The Story is called “The Wall” and is written and drawn by Peter Kuper. This book Features scenes of civil unrest, the building of a wall to separate different populations and the deportation of a large groups of people. These are only just a few of the weird parallels to the 2016 US election. This book even features the the “Dump Trump” phrase.
Above are some excerpts from Heavy Metal Magazine Volume 14 issue #3 from July of 1990.
When Bleeding first reported on this book in November of 2016 the book started to see a lot of interest with copies selling anywhere from $30 to $50. It has since cooled down – and copies can be found for under $10. Is this a stupid book? Absolutely, but this book predicted Donald Trump’s presidency platform more than 25 years before he ran. Over time this book will start picking up again and it s a good book to be looking for.
A few other noteworthy issues of Heavy Metal to be looking for:
Before it was released in English in America – Heavy Metal was released in French as “Métal hurlant” and the early French issues are great books to be picking up.
Another Heavy Metal issue that occasionally sees some interest is Heavy Metal From August 1981, Volume 5 #5. This book features the first appearance of Taarna the main female protagonist in the Heavy Metal film. There was also a recently launched new series that saw a lot of interest on release that features some incredible cover art from Alex Ross.
News broke this weekend that Katherine Langford, star of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, would be appearing in the already finished filming Avengers 4 in a secret role.
While there has been no confirmation on who she plays there has been a lot of speculation around it. Right now the more prevalent rumors are pointing towards her playing Kate Bishop – which has resulted in Kate Bishop keys starting to pick up online. Kate Bishop’s first appearance is in the 2005 title Young Avengers #1. This book has a Wizard World LA Sketch Variant cover as well as a directors cut second print. The First print of Young Avengers #1 has been selling for $30 to $40 while the directors cut has been steadily selling for $15 to $20. The Wizard World Sketch variant has had two recent raw sales on ebay of above $100.
Another Kate Bishop key book is Young Avengers Presents #6 – which features the first appearance of Kate Bishop as Hawkeye. This book has been selling for $20.
This week sees the release of Edge of Spider-Geddon #3. This book was released on the coattails of last months release of Edge of Spider-Geddon #2, which featured the first appearance of Mechanical Venom. A few days after release, the two cover set of Edge of Spider-Geddon #2 was selling online consistently for $25. Both books are currently selling for $5 to $10 each. Edge of Spider-Geddon #3 features the first appearance of Uncle Ben as Spider-Man. There are two covers for this book and both have been selling for $7 to $10. I doubt either of these books will stay at these prices but right now there is some great quick flip potential.
This week also sees the first appearance of Xandra. Xandra is the daughter of Professor Xavier and Lilandra Neramani, the Empress of the Shi’ar Empire. Xandra first appears in this weeks Mr and Mrs. X #3. While the regular cover has been selling well, it hasn’t been selling above cover whereas The 1:25 Terry Dodson variant for Mr. and Mrs. X #3 has been getting a lot of attention selling for $50 to $60 online.
Another book that comes out this week that you should look at picking up is the new Keenspot book, Junior High Horrors #1, the first issue of the four part mini-series. Junior High Horrors has four covers, all four covers homage classic horror movie posters – three of the covers were open order to retailers and one was a ratio variant. The Junior High Horrors #1 Cover B (the exorcist poster homage) has been selling on ebay for $12 while the 1 in 5 ratio cover has been selling for $25 online. As of writing this post, all four covers are still available on the keepspot website.
Yesterday marvel released a teaser for one of there SDCC panels where they released a promotional image for an upcoming Superior Octopus series. Marvel did not give a lot of information about what this series is about. The Superior Spider-Man series from 2014 to 2015 featured a Peter Parker Spider-Man that had his body taken over by Otto Octavius AKA Doctor Octopus – these two series are probably going to be connected.
The first appearance of Otto Octavius becoming the Superior Octopus is in 2017’s Amazing Spider-Man #25 (volume 4). Like all spider-man books this has a very high print run but as the first appearance of Silk has demonstrated – there is still a large group of people who have no problem buying back issue key spider-man issues at a premium. There are also several ratio variants for this book including a 1:1000 variant.
There are a lot of books coming out this week that are already selling well. Here are a few of them. PLEASE BE AWARE there is at least one spoiler in this article.
This week sees the release of another Joshua Middleton Batgirl virgin variant cover with Batgirl #24 cover B. This book has been selling for $10 to $14 online and like previous Middleton covers, has sold out at the distributor level before release.

Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur #32 features the first full appearance of Princess Fisk. Princess Fisk is the Kingpin’s daughter. This is a new take on the kingpin and has great long term holding potential. Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur #32 is currently selling for $12 to $20
The Teen Titans Special #1 comes out this week – when retailers could still order this book DC announced that it would feature a cameo appearance of Lobo’s daughter Crush. While this book does have a larger print run it is a significant issue as it not only features a last page cameo appearance from Crush it also features the death of DC Villain Black Mask. This book has been selling for $7 to $10.
Bloodstrike Brutalists #23 features the first appearance of the new Rob Liefeld slapstick character, The Pouch. This book has an alternative cover by Rob Liefeld – that has been selling for $6 to $10 online.
Another book featuring a first appearance is Venom #3. Venom #3 features the first appearance of God of the Symbiotes. While this book isn’t currently selling above cover there is a lot of buzz around this book. There are also several incentive variant covers.
