I havn’t written a post in a month… Feels good. Eventually I play to do a write up about some books I missed in the last few months.
With DC’s new Doomsday Clock title they have been doing some interesting things bringing back Alan Moore’s DC created characters. Part of this included Moore’s characters with America’s Best Comics. America’s Best Comics was a comic book imprint of Image / Wildstorm that was purchased by DC when they purchased Wildstorm Comics in 1999 from Jim Lee. In October of 2017 DC released promotional images featuring Tom Strong a character created by Moore in the America’s Best Comics Universe.
This week DC released digital previews of a few upcoming comic books on retailer only website Diamond to entice retailers to increase their orders. One of these previews, Justice League #23, revealed the induction of Alan Moore’s character Sophie Bangs / Promethea in to the DC universe.
The first full appearance of Promethea is Promethea #1. This book currently sells for under $10 in near mint condition. The possibilities of what DC can do with this character are endless, this is a book to be putting on your radar.
One thing to note is that Promethea’s first appears on the cover of America’s Best Comics #1 – a Wizard Magazine promotional preview comic. This book came with Wizard Magazine #91. This promotional comic is a one off story introducing the America’s Best Comics universe. The book includes one non speaking panel appearance from Prometha. This book also includes the introducing of post of the characters in the America’s Best Comics universe, including Tom Strong. This is another book to be looking for.
Shout out to the Raiders fans that helped put this on my radar.
Thanks to Gary Nusser for his help with Americas Best Comics #1.
This was a big week for comic book stores with the release of Marvel’s Legacy #1 but there are really only a few books you should be looking for.
This week sees the release of Spider-Gwen #24. Spider-Gwen #24 has a few store variants (some sold out in presale and are selling great online) but the regular cover has been selling for $8 to $15 online. This book features the first full appearance of Gwenom.
Following the release of The Walking Dead #171 pink signature variant, Skybound’s Red Neck #6 Cover B has a pink signature variant. No word on print run or rarity – as of this posting there have been three sales of this book at $40 each. The pink signature surprise variant might be a trend we start seeing with the next few Image / Skybound comic releases.
Later this week I will be doing a post with about updated Hollywood projects. Stay tuned.
Archie comics announced today Archie comics announced today that a new companion show for Riverdale was in the works for the CW. The TV show is planned have hour long episode and will be based on the Archie Comics series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a 8 part series published in 2014 and was much in the same vein as Afterlife with Archie.
The book to be looking for is The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1. This book had two regular covers and more than a handful of store variants.
This week sees the release of Walking Dead #171 which features a new character – “The Princess”. Like most of the new characters introduced in the Walking Dead universe, Image hyped up this news when retailers could order the book two months ago. Skybound, the Image imprint that publishes Walking Dead, surprised retailers with a special “secret” variant cover. There is a special secret Walking Dead #171 variant that features a pink signature in the bottom right corner.
Bleedingcool is reporting that this book is a 1 in 7 ratio variant and features 7 additional pages of content. This book is going to catch a lot of retailers off guard and most will not notice it. With completed ebay sales ranging from $40 to $50 this is the book to be looking for this week.
The last few weeks there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the Wolverine / Hulk Batch H story line. The first print copies of the books appear to have been under ordered by retailers resulting in most of the books selling for above cover. Most of the Totally Awesome Hulk title cross-over books are currently selling for $10 to $15.
We’ve already been introduced to the “beta” version of the Hulk / Wolverine mash up character but in this weeks issue of the new Hulk comic , Totally Awesome Hulk #22, we see the “alpha”. One spoiler I will reveal is that the Beta version (as predicted) dies and the Alpha versions takes over. This is the Alpha’s first appearance and will be regarded as the first appearance of the Batch H Character. Over the last few days this book has been selling for $8 to $15, the book is sold out at diamond and can currently be found on ebay for $10. I’ve read the issue and It looks like Marvel is planning to revisit this character in future Totally Awesome Hulk – expanding the story line and this character, which means this is a book to be buying and holding onto.
Totally Awesome Hulk #22 is not a book you want to be sleeping on.
Today there has been a rush to buy up all the available copies of Sandman #22. Why?
The Washington Post ran a review of the unreleased DC book,Dark Knights: Metal #1 – which is officially released this week. In the review (that included four full pages of the comic) was the spoiler that DC is bringing back the Sandman character. In the Metal universe the new Sandman is Daniel Hall.
Daniel Hall first appears in the Neil Gaiman sandman series as an infant. In Sandman #12, where Morpheus tells Lyta, Daniel’s pregnant mother, to go back to the world of living and raise her son. Morpheus also told Lyta that he would be coming back to take her son and reminds her to “raise him well”. In Sandman #22 Lyta has given birth and Morpheus visits her to tell her that her infants name is Daniel. This is Daniel’s first appearance outside of the womb. According to ebays completed listing search there have been 15+ sales of Sandman #22 just today.
This is a book could have great potential depending on how DC develops this story.
It was announced that Ann Weying would be appearing in the upcoming Venom film. In The Marvel Universe, Ann Weying becomes a female venom, She-Venom, this has led to the book she first appears in as She-Venom to sell for very high prices. Ann Weying first appears in Amazing Spider-Man #375 and becomes She-Venom in the Venom: Sinner Takes All series. She first becomes She-Venom in Venom:Sinner Takes All #2 and appears on the cover of Venom: Sinner takes all #3. While ASM #375 hasn’t really been selling (this book has a very high print run), Venom: Sinner Takes All #3 has been selling for up to $100 in raw near mint condition online. While Venom: Sinner Takes All #3 has been a sought after book in high grade for the last few years, this week this news has blown this book up. Two things to think about – Will the real first appearance of She-Venom start to go up? Has She-Venom been confirmed for the movie?
Another announcement that started as a rumor last week but has since been confirmed is the Umbrella Academy TV-Show announcement. The Hollywood Reporter came out with the news this week that Netflix ordered a 10 episode series for Gerard Way’s Umbrella Academy. Umbrella Academy first appears in the Dark Horse 2007 FCBD book. While this book hasn’t been getting a lot of attention the ratio variants for Umbrella Academy #1 have been (as well as the Volume 2 RRP). Another thing to keep note of is that the Gerad Way signed and graded copies will see a stronger demand down the road – Gerad Way has always been a hard to acquire signature, only attending a handful of conventions.
