Yesterday marvel released a teaser for one of there SDCC panels where they released a promotional image for an upcoming Superior Octopus series. Marvel did not give a lot of information about what this series is about. The Superior Spider-Man series from 2014 to 2015 featured a Peter Parker Spider-Man that had his body taken over by Otto Octavius AKA Doctor Octopus – these two series are probably going to be connected.
The first appearance of Otto Octavius becoming the Superior Octopus is in 2017’s Amazing Spider-Man #25 (volume 4). Like all spider-man books this has a very high print run but as the first appearance of Silk has demonstrated – there is still a large group of people who have no problem buying back issue key spider-man issues at a premium. There are also several ratio variants for this book including a 1:1000 variant.
There are a lot of books coming out this week that are already selling well. Here are a few of them. PLEASE BE AWARE there is at least one spoiler in this article.
This week sees the release of another Joshua Middleton Batgirl virgin variant cover with Batgirl #24 cover B. This book has been selling for $10 to $14 online and like previous Middleton covers, has sold out at the distributor level before release.
Another Cover B that has received a lot of attention is the Ms. Marvel #31 Stephanie Hans alternative cover. While this book was highly anticipated and heavily ordered – it has been selling for $14 to $20.
Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur #32 features the first full appearance of Princess Fisk. Princess Fisk is the Kingpin’s daughter. This is a new take on the kingpin and has great long term holding potential. Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur #32 is currently selling for $12 to $20
The Teen Titans Special #1 comes out this week – when retailers could still order this book DC announced that it would feature a cameo appearance of Lobo’s daughter Crush. While this book does have a larger print run it is a significant issue as it not only features a last page cameo appearance from Crush it also features the death of DC Villain Black Mask. This book has been selling for $7 to $10.
Bloodstrike Brutalists #23 features the first appearance of the new Rob Liefeld slapstick character, The Pouch. This book has an alternative cover by Rob Liefeld – that has been selling for $6 to $10 online.
Another book featuring a first appearance is Venom #3. Venom #3 features the first appearance of God of the Symbiotes. While this book isn’t currently selling above cover there is a lot of buzz around this book. There are also several incentive variant covers.
This week sees the release of X-men Gold #30 – I am about to spoil this book so consider this a spoiler warning! This book was advertised as a Kitty Pryde / Colossus wedding issue but inside you’ll find that Kitty Pryde leaves Colossus at the altar and in a complete plot twist Gambit and Rouge end up getting married. The X-Men Gold #30 Secret J. Scott Campbell polybag variant is the only cover to show Gambit and Rouge getting married. This is a $4.99 book that has been selling for $8 to $10 online. It is very possible this book will be considered the first appearance of Mr. and Mrs. X – the new Gambit / Rouge series announced earlier today.
Another book to look for this week is the Josh Middleton cover B of Aquaman #37. This book has sold out at the retailer distributor level and has been selling for $8 to $10 online.
The last book to look for came out last week, Oblivion Song #4 Frog Variant. Skybound released a chase variant for Oblivion Song #4 that was inserted randomly into retailers orders – this variant has a frog on the cover. The Oblivion Song #4 frog variant has been selling steadily online for $10.
I don’t think this book has a very long shelf light or has long term hold potential but right now there is one book that comes out this week that has been selling for double to triple cover price. Scooby Apocalypse #25, the more “adult” Scooby Doo DC title, features the death of Mystery Inc. Co-founder Fred Jones. This book has two covers, a regular cover A and a virgin art cover B, both have sold out at the distributor level and have been selling well online. One online retailer sold 20 copies of cover A for $8 each.
This week sees the release of Moon Girl #29. This book has already sold out at diamond and has been selling online for up to $10. Not a bad book to be looking for and picking up.
Another book that comes out this week that has sold out at the distributor level is Power Rangers #25. This issue sees the death of a very popular Power Rangers character. This book has several variants including a one-per store variant. There is a poly-bagged edition that features one of seven covers – one being a special chase, 1 in 25 variant cover. The poly-bag edition has been selling for $5 to $10 while the 1:25 variant has sold for $60 to $80.
I havn’t written a post in a month… Feels good. Eventually I play to do a write up about some books I missed in the last few months.
With DC’s new Doomsday Clock title they have been doing some interesting things bringing back Alan Moore’s DC created characters. Part of this included Moore’s characters with America’s Best Comics. America’s Best Comics was a comic book imprint of Image / Wildstorm that was purchased by DC when they purchased Wildstorm Comics in 1999 from Jim Lee. In October of 2017 DC released promotional images featuring Tom Strong a character created by Moore in the America’s Best Comics Universe.
This week DC released digital previews of a few upcoming comic books on retailer only website Diamond to entice retailers to increase their orders. One of these previews, Justice League #23, revealed the induction of Alan Moore’s character Sophie Bangs / Promethea in to the DC universe.
The first full appearance of Promethea is Promethea #1. This book currently sells for under $10 in near mint condition. The possibilities of what DC can do with this character are endless, this is a book to be putting on your radar.
One thing to note is that Promethea’s first appears on the cover of America’s Best Comics #1 – a Wizard Magazine promotional preview comic. This book came with Wizard Magazine #91. This promotional comic is a one off story introducing the America’s Best Comics universe. The book includes one non speaking panel appearance from Prometha. This book also includes the introducing of post of the characters in the America’s Best Comics universe, including Tom Strong. This is another book to be looking for.
Shout out to the Raiders fans that helped put this on my radar.
Thanks to Gary Nusser for his help with Americas Best Comics #1.
This was a big week for comic book stores with the release of Marvel’s Legacy #1 but there are really only a few books you should be looking for.
This week sees the release of Spider-Gwen #24. Spider-Gwen #24 has a few store variants (some sold out in presale and are selling great online) but the regular cover has been selling for $8 to $15 online. This book features the first full appearance of Gwenom.
Following the release of The Walking Dead #171 pink signature variant, Skybound’s Red Neck #6 Cover B has a pink signature variant. No word on print run or rarity – as of this posting there have been three sales of this book at $40 each. The pink signature surprise variant might be a trend we start seeing with the next few Image / Skybound comic releases.
Later this week I will be doing a post with about updated Hollywood projects. Stay tuned.
