Week in Review March 21

A few things this week.

Elektra #2 1:25 Adi Granov variant cover comes out this week and is preselling for $80 to $100 online. Second issues are typically under-ordered so this one could have strong legs for the next few weeks. Definitely a book to be asking your local comic book store about.

Bleedingcool did an article today about the new Wolverine character that is being teased by Marvel in the upcoming X-Men event. Marvel released the cover images of X-Men Blue #5 and #6 but blurred out the new Wolverine character. Bleedingcool is saying that this teased character is Jimmy Hudson – Wolverines son (Not Daken – Another son). This seems like the most likely scenario. This character first appeared in Ultimate X #1 from 2010. There are a few variants for this book but most covers are currently selling for under $10. This is a book to be looking for and holding onto until we find out who this character is.

Skybound Entertainment finally revealed the comic book that would be offered in the Second Megabox. I previously wrote about the Skybound Megabox here – its a Skybound themed loot crate. The second box ships out at the end of this month and features FOUR  exclusive comic books. The First comic offered in this program is still selling for $40 and just today there was a sale for ONE of the comics in the second box that sold for $50! Here are the four exclusive comics – also included is a Vinyl figure (bloody or unbloody), a unannounced Mcfarlane studio toy AND MORE.

Catch-up Picks
Totally Awesome Hulk #3 (2016)
WHY? Flying out of the pages of the Monsters Unleashed Volume 2 series, Kid Kaiju is getting his own series at Marvel. Kid Kaiju is an 11 year old child whose drawings manifest themselves. In Near Mint condition this book has flown off most online marketplaces, its not selling well raw but if the Kid Kaiju series does well this book will start to pick up. Also, CGC 9.8 copies of this book are selling north of $100.

New Avengers #8  (2013)
WHY? This was brought up by Comicsheatingup last week. New Avengers #8 is the first appearance of The Black Order. The Black Order is the name given to a group of Thanos’ Henchmen. The Black order have been confirmed to be appearing in the Avengers Infinity War film. This week this book has been selling for $10 to $18.

Tuesday Morning Speculation

I didn’t do a post last week. Does that mean I’m going to do more posts this week? Perhaps.

Here are a few talking points,

Here is a book that hasn’t really been talked about since October when it was released, He Man – Thunder Cats #1. The First print of this book has two covers, both are selling well on the secondary market with the Cover B selling for $10 to $14 and Cover A selling for $20 to $25. There is also a second print and a coloring book variant that are not seeing any love online.

These are books that many stores sold out of upon release but is still under the radar enough that you might be able to pick up a few copies

While we’re on the subject of He-man. This New He-Man on Battle Cat Dorbz Funko is selling for $75 online but limited quantities are still available on the Funko site at a strict one per order for $25!

Monday saw Disney announce the name of the new Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. This will be the eighth Star Wars film. Brought to my attention by Drew Lujan on CBSI, The Last Jedi first appeared in the Marvel comic book, Star Wars #49. This was also reported by Bleedingcool so expect sales of this book to start trending upwards while any copies in the wild start to dry up.

Last week saw the release of five retailer incentive variants. Unlike ratio variants these were variants sent to every retailer if they ordered any copies of a certain book. Image Comics Curse Words #1 Gold Foil Cover, Boom Studios WWE Gold Belt #1, Marvel Comics Monsters Island #1, Marvel Comics Mighty Captain Marvel #1 and the Batman TPB Jim Lee cover. Unlike the other retailer variants The Batman Jim Lee TPB was only sent to retailers that ordered 5 or more copies of the new Batman TPB. Many retailers still have single issues of these books which resulted in this trade paper back being under ordered and many stores did not receive this variant.

To my knowledge this is the first time DC has ever done a Trade Paper back. This book is currently selling for $50 to $100. Long term this will be a good book to be holding on to.

Week in Review December 14

This week saw the release of Atoll #1 – the second comic book about a predator shark in the last few weeks. (the other being White #1 from Devils Due). Atoll is written by Tim Daniel of Enormous and has sold out on diamond and almost all online retailers. Selling on ebay for $20 to $25. Atoll is published by Creative Mind Energy and could be at your local comic book store.

Another book that came out this week that you should be looking for is the high ratio variant of the new Transformers comic book Optimus Prime #1. The Optimus Prime #1 1:50 Paul Pope cover selling for $60 to $70. This is a book to be watching as transformers books are notorious for low print runs and have a large niche collecting market. This book should have long holding value.

The big comic book news that came out this week was that the Harley Quinn Suicide Squad spin-off film produced by and starring Margot Robbie would be titled Gotham City Sirens and featuring both Poison Ivy and Catwoman as Harley Quinn love interests.

The book Gotham City Sirens has exploded on ebay – raw copies of Gotham City Sirens #1 have sold for $50 to $90 with CGC 9.8 graded copies going for $190 to 250, with the J.G. Jones Variant $900 or best offer Buy it Now Auction selling just after the news broke – with the current lowest price copy sitting at $675.  This is book that has always been pricey in comparison to other modern books however it can still be found in the wild for under ebay completed sale prices!

Week in Review: DONALD TRUMP

This has been a very slow month for comic speculation but there are two things this week that stand up.

Donald Trump is the president. But did you know that there was a comic book that came out in 1990 that eerily featured aspects of life in 2016. This isn’t the first comic book appearance of Donald Trump- CORRECTION: Donald Trumps First appearance in Comics is Ironman #228 from March 1988 and not Hup! #13 by R.Crumb as previously stated. This 1990 book is Heavy Metal July 1990 featuring the story The Wall by Peter Kuper.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Featuring scenes of civil unrest, the building of a wall, the deportation of a large group are just some of the weird parallels to the 2016 US election. (It even features the “Dump Trump” phrase). The full story can be read here.

This book was first reported by Bleedingcool and since being reported about has sold out on ebay. – this book has the potential to be a $40+ book by next week and is a book you should be looking for! (This book is available on the Heavy Metal website for $4)

Another book that has started to heat up that you should be looking for is the new Dark Horse series – World of Tanks #1 – this book, written by Garth Ennis and based on the popular video game has been selling online for upwards of $10 to $15. Great flip potential!

Week in Review: October 27

This week sees the release of the mini-Free Comic Book day Comic Book Store holiday known as Halloween fest. Halloween Fest is another comic book store event, like free comic book day, one day a year where retailers give out special Halloweenfest edition comic books.

Among this years books is the second appearances of Dollface, Zombie Tramp Vs The Doll-Faced Witch Hunter #1– Dollface is the new Action lab comic series from the creator of Zombie Tramp, Dan Mendoza. Like Zombie Tramp, Dollface was a book that was successfully crowd-funded through Kickstarter. The first appearance of Dollface appeared in a Dollface #1 issue that was given out at the Baltimore Retailer Summit from Action Lab Comics (released September 3, 2016) – The first appearance is being published in December through Mendonza for Kickstarter funders while Action Lab is releasing Dollface #1 to comic book stores for January. So the halloween comicfest edition will be the first time comic book stores see a Dollface comic.

Why is this important? Zombie tramp has built up a cult following where the first print, first appearance of the character in near mint condition sells for north of $1000 and the Action Lab #1 sells for $10 to $20. Dollface coming from the same creator and same crowd funded based origin means this book could already have a following.
Also worth highlighting is that this Halloween comicfest comic is already selling for $8 to $12 online. Not bad for something you can pick up for free at your LCS on October 29.

Another book that has started to see some heat is the Eclipse series by Timothy Truman, Scout. Scout #1 has flown off ebay at reasonable prices – the cheapest available copy on ebay is $20. Scout has been optioned by Studio 8 who wants to turn the comic series into a live action film. This is great news considering this book is more often then not found for $1 at comic book shows and comic book stores with bargain sections!

Week in Review: October 4

This week sees the release of the new Black Mask series, Black, and the debut issue has sold out at the distributor and is going for a second printing before even going on sale. This book seems to be selling well at cover and is trending upwards but hasn’t sold for more then a dollar above cover.

This week’s book seems to be Girrion #1 from Scout Comics. I have spoken about this book before here. Girrion was a successfully funded Kickstarter that was picked up by Scout Comics (announced at SDCC). The kickstarter edition (still available for $5 on the official website) has already sold for $50! Where the Scout series has started selling for $15 with some sales hitting $20!  This book has a few retailer variants, however, if the first print is any indication of future prospects – this is a book to be looking for.

Another book that has started seeing an increased interest is Daredevil #58 (Volume 2). One thing that you might have noticed in the new Netflix Luke Cage series is that one character is referred to as “The Night Nurse” which makes it seems that Claire Temple is the Marvel Cinematic Night Nurse. It appears that the modern night nurse, the night nurse that aids Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist – first appeared in Daredevil #58 (volume 2). This book was off the radar last year but has since started selling for $10 to $20 – this is a great book to be looking for at your LCS.

Week in Review September 21

Scout comics keeps producing books that sell out and double in price on ebay. Many of the titles Scout publishes are originally published elsewhere, Like Henchgirl and Once Our Land – both of these titles originated as self-published titles, with Once Our Land only seeing publication after its successful Kickstarter campaign.

Scout Comics announced at SDCC this year that they are publishing another series after its successfully funded Kickstarter campaign – Girrion by Tom Lintern. The book comes out on October 5 and already the first print kickstarter edition is starting to heat up online. The first print Girrion #1 is selling for $25 to $30 online but can still be found on the original website for $5. A great book that could increase when Scout reprints it!

As discussed heavily on many websites, Animosity #2 sold out before its release last week and is selling for $10 and the Second print Animosity #1 selling for $25! Anything Animosity seems is hot off the presses!

Another book that has started seeing interest on the secondary market is DC’s Question #17 from 1987. This book has been selling anywhere from $15 to $35.

Why? This book features the first appearance of Rorschach in the DC Universe. Published two years after Alan Moore’s Watchmen, Question #17 features the first appearance of Rorschach outside of the Watchmen universe. This could prove to be a very important book now that DC is building its new universe with the integration of the Watchmen characters.
