Hollyweird: Week in Review June 20

Two things to be thinking about this week

This week sees the release of The “Swordquest Earthworld Classic Atari mini-comic” from Dynamite and Atari Comics. Swordquest is the first Atari property that Dynamite has turned into a comic book. Swordquest #0 debuted last month (at 25 cents!!) and this week sees the release of Swordquest #1.
The book to be looking for is the 1:10 ashcan / Mini Comic. For every 10 regular copies of Swordquest #1 that a retailer orders they receive ONE of the Swordquest mini-comics. This mini-comic (featuring a cover by George Perez) is a reprint of the original 1982 DC Mini Comic. Swordquest #1 should have a high print run in comparison to other Dynamite comics, but it would still be low compared to Marvel and DC books. The print run for issue #1 should be higher than most issue #1 Dynamite comics, just based on the 25 cent issue #0 that came out last month, but this mini comic will have 1/10 of the print run of the regular series. This is the book to be hunting for this week.

Another book to be thinking about this week is a Marvel Graphic Novel from the 80s. Bleedingcool wrote an article today saying Dave Cockrum’s creator owned property, the Futurians was being developed for a new comic and a TV series or a movie, with Rob Liefeld taking the reigns. I didn’t see anywhere in Patty Cockrum (Dave Cockrum’s wife and executive of Dave Cockrum’s estate) statement where any TV show or movie was confirmed but it does appear as if that is what the Cockrum estate is trying to push for.
Right now the only thing that has been confirmed is Rob Liefeld working on a new comic series for the Futurians. The Futurians first appeared in Marvel Graphic Novel 9 – a book that typically sells for under $10. With the Cockrum estate pushing the property this would be a great book to be buying and holding on to.

Week in Review: May 30 2018

There is really only one book to be looking for this week, Spawn Directors Cut 1 Per Store Retailer Appreciation Variant. This book features the Spawn #227 cover with a new coloring and with silver foil logos. This book was sent to every diamond account retailer making the print run 2 to 3 thousand. This book is currently selling for $80 to $100, I would expect the price to drop as more copies come to market, however, with the large Spawn fan base this could be a long term collectors item.

The Unquotable Trump is an ashcan comic book featuring classic comic covers redone featuring Donald Trump and various quotes from speeches he’s made.  Drawn and Quarterly picked up the comic and is publishing an over-sized treasury edition in November. In the past week on ebay this ashcan has sold from $15 to $30. You can still buy copies of this ashcan for $4 from this link.

Spotlight on Aftershock Comics

Last week saw the release of Aftershock Comics, Pestilence #1. Pestilence sold out at the distributor on day of release, copies of the book have been selling for double to triple cover price – Copies of the standard cover is currently selling for around $8.
While the 1:10 variant cover is selling for $20 to $30 – both retailer variants – The Comic Mint and Eh! Variant seem to be selling like gangbusters on the secondary market.

Screen Shot 2017-05-08 at 11.10.45 PM

Another Aftershock title that has been seeing a lot of attention is Baby Teeth. Baby teeth features art by Garry Brown and is written by Donny Cates. This book has had a lot of buzz based on the success of Donny Cates previous projects God Country and Redneck. Baby teeth is due for release on June 7 and will have the largest print run of any Aftershock title, its also set to have 5+ retailer variant covers.
So why is this important? If retailer order and prerelease buzz are any indication, Baby Teeth is going to be big and when its released people are going to start trying to hunt down the first appearance of the title and its characters. The first appearance of Baby Teeth is the C2E2 Diamond Summit ashcan, distributed to retailers at the 2017 Diamond Summit in Chicago.

Hollyweird: April Edition

This week it was announced that Hulu has ordered a pilot for a Locke and Key series. Most articles about this say that there was a “very competitive” bidding war. Which seems unlikely considering there was no interest in the series after FOX ordered a pilot and decided not to move forward after filming was completed in 2011. Locke and Key #1 seems to be the book people are looking for.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 3.51.33 PM

It was announced this week that Sony was making a live action movie about He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This is sure to bring more attention to DC Comics Presents #47 – the first appearance of He-Man in comics.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 3.50.55 PM

Joe Benitez creator of Lady Mechanika took to facebook this week to announce his Lady Mechanika creator owned series had been optioned for a television series. Lady Mechanika has been a popular indie series upon release, since this news broke there has been a lot of interest in the series first issue Lady Mechanika #0 and its various printings and variants. Something that has been largely ignored is that Lady Mechanika first appeared in a pin-up piece by Joe Benitez in Worlds of Aspen FCBD 2010. This book could see a lot of interest if the television series ever comes to fruition.

It was also confirmed this week that Adam Warlock would be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Week in Review April 25

I’m going to do a post about the things I missed last week tomorrow, so be on the look out for that.

At C2E2 Over the weekend it was announced that Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s Revival is being adapted into a film by Shattlerglass Films. A Teaser was shown. As a result Revival #1s have started to sell again! Two things to keep note of, the Revival #1 Sketch edition only has 500 copies and is a great book to be looking for and holding on to, The first appearance of Revival is Image 2012 Free Comic Book Day Edition book.

Skybound / Image Comics released THREE retailer appreciation books this week that you should be asking your retailer about. The first is the Kill the Minotaur Ashcan. This is a one per store ashcan and is the first published appearance of this series and characters, its a very large book that reprints the entire issue in black and white in the ashcan size.

s-l1600

The other two books Image released are reprints of Redneck #1, one is the Black and White Cover A with Silver Foil Logo and the other is a Cover A with Gold Foil logo. While these books together have sold online in presale for up to $250, these books are currently selling for $40 each. Since these books are given to every store with a diamond account that ordered the book there will be a lot of copies out there this week.

If you want to speculate on Redneck the book you should be buying is the ashcan. This book came out before issue #1 and is the TRUE first appearance of the series and characters – this book can be purchased on ebay for $40 to $50, which is a steal when you consider the high price sales of the gold and silver foil variants.

IMG_0003
Another book to be on the lookout for tomorrow is ‘Namwolf #1. Springing from the success of Hillbilly, ‘Namwolf is another series published by Eric Powell’s Albatross Legacy Books, this book has two covers and both covers have multiple sales above cover. There is no ratio variant just a cover A and B.

Week in Review March 21

A few things this week.

Elektra #2 1:25 Adi Granov variant cover comes out this week and is preselling for $80 to $100 online. Second issues are typically under-ordered so this one could have strong legs for the next few weeks. Definitely a book to be asking your local comic book store about.

Bleedingcool did an article today about the new Wolverine character that is being teased by Marvel in the upcoming X-Men event. Marvel released the cover images of X-Men Blue #5 and #6 but blurred out the new Wolverine character. Bleedingcool is saying that this teased character is Jimmy Hudson – Wolverines son (Not Daken – Another son). This seems like the most likely scenario. This character first appeared in Ultimate X #1 from 2010. There are a few variants for this book but most covers are currently selling for under $10. This is a book to be looking for and holding onto until we find out who this character is.

Skybound Entertainment finally revealed the comic book that would be offered in the Second Megabox. I previously wrote about the Skybound Megabox here – its a Skybound themed loot crate. The second box ships out at the end of this month and features FOUR  exclusive comic books. The First comic offered in this program is still selling for $40 and just today there was a sale for ONE of the comics in the second box that sold for $50! Here are the four exclusive comics – also included is a Vinyl figure (bloody or unbloody), a unannounced Mcfarlane studio toy AND MORE.

Catch-up Picks
Totally Awesome Hulk #3 (2016)
WHY? Flying out of the pages of the Monsters Unleashed Volume 2 series, Kid Kaiju is getting his own series at Marvel. Kid Kaiju is an 11 year old child whose drawings manifest themselves. In Near Mint condition this book has flown off most online marketplaces, its not selling well raw but if the Kid Kaiju series does well this book will start to pick up. Also, CGC 9.8 copies of this book are selling north of $100.

Screen Shot 2017-03-22 at 12.52.43 AM.png
New Avengers #8  (2013)
WHY? This was brought up by Comicsheatingup last week. New Avengers #8 is the first appearance of The Black Order. The Black Order is the name given to a group of Thanos’ Henchmen. The Black order have been confirmed to be appearing in the Avengers Infinity War film. This week this book has been selling for $10 to $18.

Tuesday Morning Speculation

I didn’t do a post last week. Does that mean I’m going to do more posts this week? Perhaps.

Here are a few talking points,

Here is a book that hasn’t really been talked about since October when it was released, He Man – Thunder Cats #1. The First print of this book has two covers, both are selling well on the secondary market with the Cover B selling for $10 to $14 and Cover A selling for $20 to $25. There is also a second print and a coloring book variant that are not seeing any love online.

These are books that many stores sold out of upon release but is still under the radar enough that you might be able to pick up a few copies

While we’re on the subject of He-man. This New He-Man on Battle Cat Dorbz Funko is selling for $75 online but limited quantities are still available on the Funko site at a strict one per order for $25!

Monday saw Disney announce the name of the new Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. This will be the eighth Star Wars film. Brought to my attention by Drew Lujan on CBSI, The Last Jedi first appeared in the Marvel comic book, Star Wars #49. This was also reported by Bleedingcool so expect sales of this book to start trending upwards while any copies in the wild start to dry up.

latest-1

Last week saw the release of five retailer incentive variants. Unlike ratio variants these were variants sent to every retailer if they ordered any copies of a certain book. Image Comics Curse Words #1 Gold Foil Cover, Boom Studios WWE Gold Belt #1, Marvel Comics Monsters Island #1, Marvel Comics Mighty Captain Marvel #1 and the Batman TPB Jim Lee cover. Unlike the other retailer variants The Batman Jim Lee TPB was only sent to retailers that ordered 5 or more copies of the new Batman TPB. Many retailers still have single issues of these books which resulted in this trade paper back being under ordered and many stores did not receive this variant.

s-l1600-1
To my knowledge this is the first time DC has ever done a Trade Paper back. This book is currently selling for $50 to $100. Long term this will be a good book to be holding on to.
