Spotlight on Aftershock Comics

Last week saw the release of Aftershock Comics, Pestilence #1. Pestilence sold out at the distributor on day of release, copies of the book have been selling for double to triple cover price – Copies of the standard cover is currently selling for around $8.
While the 1:10 variant cover is selling for $20 to $30 – both retailer variants – The Comic Mint and Eh! Variant seem to be selling like gangbusters on the secondary market.

Another Aftershock title that has been seeing a lot of attention is Baby Teeth. Baby teeth features art by Garry Brown and is written by Donny Cates. This book has had a lot of buzz based on the success of Donny Cates previous projects God Country and Redneck. Baby teeth is due for release on June 7 and will have the largest print run of any Aftershock title, its also set to have 5+ retailer variant covers.
So why is this important? If retailer order and prerelease buzz are any indication, Baby Teeth is going to be big and when its released people are going to start trying to hunt down the first appearance of the title and its characters. The first appearance of Baby Teeth is the C2E2 Diamond Summit ashcan, distributed to retailers at the 2017 Diamond Summit in Chicago.

Week in Review March 23

As promised here are two books to be looking for that came out this week:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #56 – Sold out at Diamond Comics distrubutor last week. IDW has already solicited a second print for this issue. Like all IDW Turtles there is a subscription variant and a 1:10 Variant cover, releasing three covers tomorrow. This book features the first appearance of Leatherhead – a new mutant in the TMNT universe. The length he’ll stick around for is questionable. The likelihood of the regular cover selling for $10 by next week is not likely. The 1:10 Variant cover is the cover to be throwing your money into.
As reported by Trey over at CBSI / Comic Book Invest , in this weeks issue of Batman (Batman #50), Duke Thomas is offered to become the new Robin. Subsequently, this has resulted in Duke Thomas’s first appearance, Batman #21 (new 52) to start to heat up. This book which sold for less than $10 last week is currently trending at $20 and is moving upwards – with the lower print second print and the 1:100 and convention variant cover also selling for a considerable amount of money. This is a book to be looking for at your local comic book store.

One more things to take note of are the speculation value of the first appearance of Gwenom – Guardians of the Unknown #1 Guillory Variant – which is currently selling for $40. Up from the $20 sales of yesterday and the $5 sales of last week. Will this book start to drop in value before the series comes out or continue to climb? Time can only tell. Not a book I’d be spending the big bucks on but a book I’d be looking for in the wild.

Paper Girls – American Newspaper Delivery Guild

This was put on my radar by Good old Matt Skillman of The CBSI on Google Plus.
This was also recently brought up in a Reddit subforum.

Straight out of the letters papers of Paper Girls is a special members only sign up club form.

One user on Reddit Posted what they had received in the mail after sending a self-addressed envelope to the above address – posting this Membership Card and its accompanied letter.

This item could have speculative value down the line as Paper Girls continues and these items are no longer offered. Now is the time to be sending those self-addressed envelopes!

So I talked about this briefly last month, but next week sees the release of the new Howard the Duck series with an all-new Gwen-Pool (Gwen Stacy / Deadpool Mashup) back-up story. There appears to be five variant covers for this book (pending release date November 4 2015) but the clear winner already is the Howard the Duck Volume 6 #1 1:25 Gwen-Pool cover, the only cover featuring a solo Gwen Stacy / Deadpool.

latest-1This book has had multiple sales in the past few days at the $80 point. This 1:25 ratio variant is one to be looking for. Where as her first appearance Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2 Gwen Pool cover is selling for $25 to $40 in near mint condition, this is her first actual story outside of a cover and should go up in value based on how Marvel uses the character down the line.

Screen shot 2015-10-28 at 7.01.59 PMAlso Forbidden Planet Comics has exclusive 451 Comics variant covers, first prints available on there website for $7! Great books to be picking up!

Weird Hollywood: Booster Gold and Blue Beetle

This week news came out that DC was working on a Blue Beetle / Booster Gold team up movie within the DC Cinematic Universe.

Screen shot 2015-09-22 at 2.29.43 AM

The first appearance of Booster Gold, Booster Gold #1 (1986) has been trending upwards for the past two years, moving out of the dollar bins and entering the $50 in near mint condition arena. I spoke about this here last year. Near Mint / Mint Copies are also on fire! Where in todays marketplace CGC 9.8 copies of Booster Gold #1 are also on fire, the current GPA Three Month Average falls around $225 – where the most recent sale was $300.

35d7r12Blue Beetle has a much longer life story being brought into comics in 1939 first appearing in Mystery Men Comics #1. Blue Beetle has been published by a varitey of comics book publishers however DC bought the full publishing rights for the character in 1983. DC has had three incarnations of characters taking on the Blue Beetle costume – first discussed by Simon Payne on ComicbookInvest – The Blue Beetle that will appear in the Booster Gold / Blue Beetle is the third incarnation of the character – Jaime Reyes.

Screen shot 2015-09-22 at 3.05.15 AM

The first appearance of Jaime Reyes is Infinite Crisis #3 – however Jaime Reyes doesn’t put the costume on until Infinite Crisis #5. I personally think Infinite Crisis #3 is the book to look for. It has one regular cover, one variant cover (by George Perez) and a second print sketch cover. Right now copies of this book has flown off ebay however copies are still very findable in the wild.

Week in Review: Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #5

This week saw the introduction of the a new spider-man character. In Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #5 we saw the introduction of a A Mary-Jane Iron-Man, code named “MOM”.

Already this book’s variants have jumped in price. With the 1:200 black and white variants selling for up to $350! This character is already drawing comparisons to Spider-Gwen the Gwen Stacy Iron Man. Considering both Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (First Spider-Gwen) and Amazing Spider-Man #4 (First Silk) current values this book has legs. Right now the Joe Quesada Colour and Sketch variant covers seem to be the books to look for. (There are four different Quesada Variants)

Screen shot 2015-09-10 at 12.14.43 AM As Pointed out by Bleedingcool, this isn’t the first time Mary Jane has put on an Iron-Man Suit. Mary Jane first put on the suit in Marvel Knights Spider-Man #20 – a book that has virtually disappeared off the online marketplace. This book has potential to sell for $20 – and is still findable at your Local Comic Book Store.

Week in Review: August 7

Screen shot 2015-03-06 at 2.25.20 AM

Nothing big has happened in the last few weeks but there are a few pieces of small news surrounding hollywood comic book optioning that will fill this post.

Today bleedingcool wrote a post about Image’s series Oddly Normal, announcing it had been optioned for an animated TV-Show. Oddly Normal was originally printed by Viper Comics before a hiatus and a Image Comics relaunch, making the VIPER Comics series the one to look for. Prices are kind of all over the place on ebay for the Viper series, but it should still be reasonably priced in the wild. Oddly Normal #1 from Viper Comics is the clear winner. (I did talk about this book previously here)

Screen shot 2015-08-07 at 9.32.45 PM

Anther book that had hollywood movement is Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. This week Sony pictures announced a January 13, 2017 intended release date for the upcoming Marvel Comics adaption. The Dark Tower is a popular series of Stephen King books that were adapted and a prequel with creative direction from King were released by Marvel Comics in 2007, followed by numerous compilations and follow-up stories. The book to look for is the first book Stephen King’s Dark Tower The Gunslinger’s Born #1. This book has a few variants and the one to look for, which can still be found for fairly reasonable prices is the Book Market RRP Variant cover. This particular variant  had 500 – 1000 copies released. This book has a lot of moving room – but the one to look for is Stephen King’s Dark Tower The Gunslinger’s Born #1, first print or variant covers, with the Book Market RRP being the clear winner.

The last piece of comic related news to come out this week is about the recent Gambit castings. There has been some weird rumours surrounding Channing Tatum accepting the role long term or only appearing briefly as the character but as it currently stands Channing Tatum is set to play Gambit in the upcoming X-Men film AND have a spin-off “Gambit – origin” film. Right now there are casting calls to fill a Belladonna character. Bella Donna Boudreaux first appeared in the Marvel universe In X-Men #8 (1990). She was a love interest / ally in the comics so i’m sure that will be her role in the film. Her first appearance can be found in dollar bins and is currently very undervalued but that is sure to change as more news comes out about the Gambit film. This is a book to be looking for and holding onto.
