Week in Review March 21

A few things this week.

Elektra #2 1:25 Adi Granov variant cover comes out this week and is preselling for $80 to $100 online. Second issues are typically under-ordered so this one could have strong legs for the next few weeks. Definitely a book to be asking your local comic book store about.

Bleedingcool did an article today about the new Wolverine character that is being teased by Marvel in the upcoming X-Men event. Marvel released the cover images of X-Men Blue #5 and #6 but blurred out the new Wolverine character. Bleedingcool is saying that this teased character is Jimmy Hudson – Wolverines son (Not Daken – Another son). This seems like the most likely scenario. This character first appeared in Ultimate X #1 from 2010. There are a few variants for this book but most covers are currently selling for under $10. This is a book to be looking for and holding onto until we find out who this character is.

Skybound Entertainment finally revealed the comic book that would be offered in the Second Megabox. I previously wrote about the Skybound Megabox here – its a Skybound themed loot crate. The second box ships out at the end of this month and features FOUR  exclusive comic books. The First comic offered in this program is still selling for $40 and just today there was a sale for ONE of the comics in the second box that sold for $50! Here are the four exclusive comics – also included is a Vinyl figure (bloody or unbloody), a unannounced Mcfarlane studio toy AND MORE.

Catch-up Picks
Totally Awesome Hulk #3 (2016)
WHY? Flying out of the pages of the Monsters Unleashed Volume 2 series, Kid Kaiju is getting his own series at Marvel. Kid Kaiju is an 11 year old child whose drawings manifest themselves. In Near Mint condition this book has flown off most online marketplaces, its not selling well raw but if the Kid Kaiju series does well this book will start to pick up. Also, CGC 9.8 copies of this book are selling north of $100.

Shameless Plug

Right when the American election couldn’t get weirder and more in your face, the Hillary Clinton campaign reminded everyone that comic books characters can still be important. Hillary Clinton’s campaign is currently targeting Donald Trump online supporters, here is a screen capture from her website.

Pepe the frog is a comic book character that through websites like 4chan and reddit has been associated with memes and viral content. Pepe is a frog that lives with three other animals whom play video games, drink and get high together. These characters have  no association with white supremacy.

Pepe the frog first appears in Boys Club #1 a self published comic-zine by Matt Furie in 2006 – later collected in trade paper back by Fantagraphics Comics. The original zine has grown in popularity considerably after Clinton started talking about the character.

Over the past week since being brought up by Clinton, the first printing of Boys Club #1 has quickly grown from a $10 to $20 book to a $50 to $60 book. This is a great book to be looking for (and can still be found in some comic book stores that cater to more independent publishers!)

Read more of Hillary on Pepe here

Expect a week in review post this week featuring some catch-up news as well as some great speculation tidbits I’ve neglected to post about in the past month.

Week in Review: After SDCC JULY 27

Three things of note this week

I’ve read a lot of people talking about But Like Maybe #1 this week. This book is entirely an example of the current modern pump and dump. The book is not selling above cover online but “speculators” are saying its a great pick. Don’t be fooled. The book is “the first comic to be based on an instagram user”. Also – Its still available on Diamond!

This week the big news came about about the character Kurt Russell will be playing in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 2 film. It was revealed at SDCC he would be playing Ego the Living Planet, which in itself sounds insane. There should be other appearances of this character that will go up in value over time, but right now the books to look for are the first cameo and first full appearances – Thor #132 and Thor #133.

Currently these books can be found in the wild for under $50 with some bargain $10 to $20 copies. These are both books to start looking for as they are going crazy on ebay with Thor #132 and #133 being on fire!

An earlier version of this post said Ego’s first cameo appearance was in Thor #131. It is not. However, Thor #131 features the first appearance of the Rigellians. The Rigellians are known as “colonizers” in the Marvel Universe and based on how Ego The Living Planet (WHO EATS OTHER WORLDS) develops, this could be another key guardians of the Galaxy book. (So not a bad book to be looking for)

Thor #202 is also worth mentioning as it features the first appearance of Ego in (arguably) his first human form. As in Thor #202 Ego comes to Earth and fights the Asgardians. – This book has been selling for $20 to $30 – which is up from the $10 of a few weeks ago.

Another silver age book that has started going up in price online is Flash #128. Good to Very Good copies of this book have started to sell for $40! Which is almost double what they were selling for three months ago! Flash #128 features the first appearance of Abra Kadabra. DC seems to be building this character up, with him rumored to appear on the upcoming Flash Point season of the Flash.

(This character has been rumored to appear on the show for some time, however now it seems the CW is really moving forward with the character.)
However – as posted on Bleedingcool – This weeks Titan #1 comic reveals that Dr. Manhattan might not be the reason behind the New 52 and now the rebirth storyline (where 5 years were lost).

DC has confirmed that Dr. Manhattan and the Watchmen DC Universe build up is happening so this is probably just a red herring, however, the book is starting to sell based on this news.

BIG SHOUT OUT TO William Zachman, Lincoln Spader and Jeff “Nebo” N for there help with this post!

Hollywood Daze: Wonder-Jesus

Big news came out today from the Millar World Camp. The movies rights of both Supercrocks and American Jesus have been purchased by Waypoint Entertainment. American Jesus was originally published by Dark Horse as Chosen, a three part mini-series later reprinted as a $10 graphic novel by Image comics and rebranded as “American Jesus”. This is important because Chosen came out before the success of the very popular Kick-Ass series as well as before Millar took on major titles at Marvel like Civil War and Wolverine. When published in 2004, this book had very little speculation around it, however, upon release there was much controversy with the content – a 14 year old boy finding out he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

Enter a caption

With a reported print run of 20,000 (as reported by Comichron), this is a book to be looking for. With sales in the past day from $3 to $15 – The Chosen #1 is a book on the rise.

Guardians of the Galaxy started filming this week and with that comes some spoilers and hints for speculation. It appears that the movie will have a Planet of the Apes styled Starlord Time travel scene, where his space craft crashes on present day Earth to find the super-hero of the time, Wonder Man in action, played by Nathan Fillion. Nathan has been spotted in full Wonder Man costume as well as on posters plastered around the set as Wonder Man, suggesting the film might take place in the current time of the Marvel film universe. This brings up three books to look for: Avengers #9 – the first appearance of Wonder Man (already a pretty high priced key book). The other two are more easily attainable- Wonder Man #1 – one shot from 1986 and Wonder Man #1 the first issue of the on-going series from 1991.

These two books help cement the Wonder Man solo storyline and should be good short term speculation books.

I have been terrible with posts lately so this week you should expect a week in review post as well as some kind of “last week in review” catch-up post. (Also Shark / Bear Love should be explained in my next post)

Hollywood Spotlight: The Boys

The Boys was originally published in 2006 under the DC creator owned, Wildstorm label. The series is based around a team, “The Boys”, that police super-heroes (except the super-heroes are a lot more adult). DC cancelled the series after issue 6, for what Garth Ennis described as “anti-hero” content. The series was later continued by Dynamite Entertainment for its 72 issues and multiple mini-series. Last week, Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg announced they were working on adapting The Boys with Cinemax.

Screen shot 2016-04-16 at 2.17.57 AM
This happened after it was reported in October that they were shopping around the title. Here are the books to be looking for:
The Boys #1 – The First appearance of the Boys Team – as well as main characters Butcher and Wee Hughie.
The Boys #2 – The First appearance of the Frenchmen and the “female of the species”. (although they appear on the Cover of Issue #1)
The Boys # 3 – the first appearance of the seven.
The Boys #7 – the first appearance of The LEGEND.

The newly published Scout Comics series, Henchgirl, has a confirmed TV show on the way- with a rumored 2500 print run for issue #1. This was originally published independently in 2014 by creator Kristen Gudsnuk and the first series is near to impossible to find. With the new Scout Comic Series #1 selling for upwards of $50 to $60, imagine what the 2014 #1 would sell for.

Next Post – Shark/Bear Love
Big shout out to Simon Payne for his help with this post!

DC and NBC’s new Workplace Comedy “Powerless”

Two weeks ago DC Announced a partnership with NBC for a workplace comedy titled “Powerless”. Little information was revealed except that a pilot was being filmed and that the series would feature Crimson Fox and that the series would focus on the super-heroes’ “normal” human counterparts. Since then, pictures from the set have leaked online displaying Crimson Fox in all her glory. Crimson Fox’s first appearances are all dollar books and up until this announcement held very little if any value.

Screen shot 2016-03-29 at 1.05.46 AM

Crimson Fox first appeared in Justice League of Europe #6 in a very short, “shown on a newspaper”, scene. (see below).

Screen shot 2016-03-29 at 1.08.44 AM

This was a very brief appearance, however, this is Crimson Fox’s first appearance. Crimson Fox didn’t appear again until Justice League of Europe #23 – which not only features Crimson Fox’s first full appearance, she is also featured prominently on the cover.

Screen shot 2016-03-29 at 1.07.45 AM

Both of these books, while currently selling for under $10 online, are sure to grow as more news unfolds about the Powerless TV series. These books are worth buying and holding on to.

THE RUNDOWN: Daredevil Season Two

WARNING: The next post might contain some minor spoilers for the Season Two of Daredevil on Netflix. I was able to finish watching the new season of Daredevil this weekend and was able to find two books that seem to be starting to heat up. The new season was great adding some of the great iconic Frank Miller Daredevil concepts.

Screen shot 2016-03-22 at 12.14.25 AM

The first book that you should be looking for comes from The Punisher Volume 4 #3 from 2000. This book features a scene brought to life and used as the source material for the introduction of the Punisher to Daredevil. To avoid spoilers that scene can be seen here.

This book sold for $4 to $7 on ebay two weeks ago and can be found in many dollar bins at your local comic book convention. Recently, however, this book has been selling upwards of $25 in near mint condition. Since this scene can only be made once, this book is sure to lose steam. Although, there is still time to make money with this book. When this book was released it came sealed with a Marvel Knight Promotional comic book – most copies were opened which resulted in unopened copies demanding a premium on the secondary market.

The second book you should be looking for is the first appearance of the Hand. The Hand is the mythical Marvel Universe gang of mercenaries created by Frank Miller in Daredevil #174.

Screen shot 2016-03-22 at 1.04.18 AM

The storyline of the second season of Daredevil features heavy appearances from the Hand organization. The Hand isn’t going anywhere as this group continues to play an integral part in Daredevil story-lines both classic and new. The first appearance of “The Hand” Daredevil #174 currently sells on average for $25 to $30 in near mint condition. Now is the time to be buying this issue as it is very undervalued (more people will realize this once they finish watching the entire new season).
