Hollywood Daze: Wonder-Jesus

Big news came out today from the Millar World Camp. The movies rights of both Supercrocks and American Jesus have been purchased by Waypoint Entertainment. American Jesus was originally published by Dark Horse as Chosen, a three part mini-series later reprinted as a $10 graphic novel by Image comics and rebranded as “American Jesus”. This is important because Chosen came out before the success of the very popular Kick-Ass series as well as before Millar took on major titles at Marvel like Civil War and Wolverine. When published in 2004, this book had very little speculation around it, however, upon release there was much controversy with the content – a 14 year old boy finding out he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

With a reported print run of 20,000 (as reported by Comichron), this is a book to be looking for. With sales in the past day from $3 to $15 – The Chosen #1 is a book on the rise.

Guardians of the Galaxy started filming this week and with that comes some spoilers and hints for speculation. It appears that the movie will have a Planet of the Apes styled Starlord Time travel scene, where his space craft crashes on present day Earth to find the super-hero of the time, Wonder Man in action, played by Nathan Fillion. Nathan has been spotted in full Wonder Man costume as well as on posters plastered around the set as Wonder Man, suggesting the film might take place in the current time of the Marvel film universe. This brings up three books to look for: Avengers #9 – the first appearance of Wonder Man (already a pretty high priced key book). The other two are more easily attainable- Wonder Man #1 – one shot from 1986 and Wonder Man #1 the first issue of the on-going series from 1991.

These two books help cement the Wonder Man solo storyline and should be good short term speculation books.

I have been terrible with posts lately so this week you should expect a week in review post as well as some kind of “last week in review” catch-up post. (Also Shark / Bear Love should be explained in my next post)

The Weird Catch-Up: Battle Chasers / Robotech

Screen shot 2015-03-30 at 3.40.18 PM

Here are two Hollywood inspired books that I haven’t talked about.

Last month it was announced that Battle Chasers would be coming back in the form of a video-game – and the comic book series (which ended at issue #8) would be continued and relaunched. With Battle Chasers creator Joe Madureira playing a big role in with the video games production and new comic book’s art.

Battle Chasers #1 Cover B and the alternative nude cover selling for $30 to $40
Other covers of issue #1 are starting to hover around $10, which is strong movement out of the dollar bin.

Screen shot 2015-03-30 at 3.32.32 PMIMG_0011

Another book that can still be found for relatively cheap is Macross #1 from 1984. This book has always been a $10 to $20 book the last few years. Macross #1 is proceeded by Robototech Macross Saga #2 1985  – making it the first issue of Robotech. Robotech were a brand of toys first originating in Japan that made its way over to the US, and like the Transformers had its own branded animated television series. It was announced this week that Robotech would see a live-action adaptation with Sony announcing through Variety they plan on making Robotech a franchise movie series.
This has resulted in Macross #1 selling for upwards of $60 online with graded copies hitting new record prices. This is a book that you can still find in the wild but it has a lot of holding potential.

2015 Movie Watch: Part 2

Part Two of hollywood speculation to look forward to in 2015. Find Part 1 here.

Justice League Dark
Justice_League_Dark_Vol_1_1Screen shot 2015-01-02 at 2.56.44 AMswampthing49IMG_0001

Guillermo Del Toro has been working for almost the last ten years trying to put this film together. He just recently gave the final script to Warner Brothers to review. This film will happen. Right now the two books to go for are Justice League Dark #1 (NEW 52 VOLUME 1) and Swamp Thing #50 (or Swamp Thing #49 / Swamp Thing #50) – Justice League #9 (new 52 Volume 1) to a lesser extent, but still, this book has great potential, new creative team and the team showing up in the movie become the main story.

Doctor Strange

There is still a lot to be revealed about this movie before it starts films. So far, aside from the first two appearance books the only book that has come out of this is the Marvel Graphic Novel: Doctor Strange Into Shamballa – based on interior pages being tweeted by the films director. This book seems to be on-fire, but this is a sell now before more information of the movie comes out that negates this as film plot point.

Captain Marvel / Ms. Marvel

The Captain Marvel movie being based around Carol Danvers is big news; A female Captain Marvel film. There are three books to look for in regards to this film, Marvel Superheroes #12 – The First appearance of Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel #1 (Volume 7) First Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, and Captain Marvel #14 (Volume 7). Scott Hepburn, interior artist on Captain Marvel, recently revealed that he was directed by Marvel to put a “noticeable teenage dark skinned girl” into a scene. This means that Captain Marvel #14 is a no contest first appearance of the new Ms. Marvel – Kamala Khan. Kamala Khan will appear in the marvel cinematic universe and her first appearance only has one place to go. (up)

To be continued next week! Have any suggestions for what I should talk about in the next Movie Post? Leave a comment!

2015 Movie Watch: Part 1

The last twelve months has really demonstrated the power of television and film adaptation influenced comic book speculation. It almost felt like some properties were being bought without the intention of being developed. Here is a run down of Comic book properties that should see an increase of interest based on this kind of speculation. Every week in January I plan on posting a continuation to this post.

Cowboy Ninja Viking

$_57-2The movie is full-on in development, with Chris Pratt signed on to play the leading role. Information hasn’t been released yet about the Director, which means there is still a lot of behind the scenes work being done. As convention season starts in full in March, more information will be released about the plans for this movie, which will bring up demand for Cowboy Ninja Viking #1 – which is currently selling at around $65.

Suicide Squad

This film is plotted to start filming this April in Toronto – that means that while information and media pictures start appearing on the internet, the main character books are going to start going up in value.
First appearance of Deadshot (Detective Comics #474) – Played by WILL SMITH (HE’S A UNDERCOVER MEN IN BLACK!)
First appearance of Amanda Waller (DC Legends #1) – Played by VIOLA DAVIS (SHE WON AN OSCAR)

From Hell
Screen shot 2015-01-02 at 2.25.36 AM

The From Hell TV Show is rumoured to have the first few episodes already filmed. This means that there is only a small window left to speculate on From Hell #1 first prints (LOOK AT THE INDICA WHEN BUYING TO MAKE SURE ITS FIRST PRINT)- which when the TV-Show has an announced release day, will increase in demand.

IZombie #1 is a $14 to $20 book right now. The TV-Show has at least six episodes filmed and is slated to be shown on the CW at some point this year – probably after Arrow. Based on the success of Arrow and Flash and its cross-over popularity – IZombie #1 is another book that is going to be have a huge demand. Buy them now before the Arrow kids are going bonkers for them!

Word?! Weird War Tales #93

First and foremost big shout out to 1Tommyg69 – for giving me this tip!

LT. Matthew Shrieve the only human member of the creature commandos has been cast and will be appearing in the third season of Arrow! That means in a few weeks this character will appear on the tiny screen for the first time. Already his first appearance has skyrocketed in value – Weird War Tales #93 – The first appearance of the Creature Commandos (and Lt. Matthew Shrieve)

Screen shot 2014-12-21 at 12.34.32 AM

Two months ago this book sold for $10 – $15 with one 9.8 sale four years ago for $200. NOW, the book is averaging $60 – $80 and is only going higher.

Screen shot 2014-12-21 at 12.34.16 AM
This is a book to find before people realize its potential.

Again, big ups to 1Tommyg69 – for giving me this tip! Got a tip? Leave a comment below!

Word?!?: Carrie Kelley

Apparently an extra on the new Batman Superman film is being sued for two million dollars or something stupid, all because they released the information of who was playing Carrie Kelley in the upcoming film. This development means Carrie Kelley will be appearing in the new film, Carrie Kelley will most likely be developed into the film-verse version of Robin (Like the epic Frank Miller Batman books) – her first appearance in comics and her first appearance in the New 52 will be sought after as the film further develops.

They are,

Batman The Dark Knight Returns
Batman and Robin #19 New 52

Battling Pope (when will I write this?)
Increase in Edge of Spider-Verse 2 – acronym EOSV prevailing – Other Spider-Girl books to increase?  – Plus the Cameo appearance variant at $40+ ?!?
House of M / Further Secret Wars speculation
Also it appears Richard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter #1 is heating up

Turn Down for What?!?! Hollywood Week Three (part two)

More news. Newsrama and Dateline are reporting that FOX has now optioned Lucifer and have ordered a Pilot to be made. Yes, Lucifer from Sandman.

What should you buy what shouldn’t you buy?

The first appearance of Lucifer is Sandman #4, however, the DC wiki page indicates that the character first appeared in a dream in a long forgotten issue of Jimmy Olsen. Forget that. The speculation drive for this series will be based around three books. (Ignoring the Sandman film that is apparently being in the works that has and is still driving up the prices of Sandman #1 and #8 respectively)

Sandman #4 – The first appearance of Lucifer in the Neil Gaiman universe. Since the news has been announced most copies of this book on ebay have dried up.

Screen shot 2014-09-17 at 12.56.47 AM

Lucifer #1 – The Mike Carey series, easily found in back issue long boxes, this book is spiking upwards with auctions floating over $15+
This book can easily be comparable to Hellblazer #1, whereas the issue has no real signficance to the character other than it being the first #1 issue – prices of Hellblazer #1 are so healthy that it would be dumb not to look for this book.

Lucifer #1 first appears in a preview flip book – Lucifer #1 / Swamp Thing #1 Volume 2 VERTIGO Flip book, this book will probably be ignored until the Lucifer #1 and Sandman #4 copies dry up in the wild. So give it a week – this book is sold by Mile High Comics for $2, and is the preview and first appearance of Lucifer #1 – This is like Swamp Thing #67 – which sold for high numbers when Hellblazer was first announced but recent prices have fallen out. So this is a potential buy and dump situation.

Also, whats going on with this new Image Oddly Normal on-going Series and will it have any effect on the 2005 mini-series from VIPER Comics (Later successfully kickstarted and reprinted in TPB)?
