This year Image Comics celebrated the 15th anniversary of Walking Dead as a comic book store wide Walking Dead day celebration. They released numerous reprints of key issues with new variant covers. Some of these were Walking Dead 15th Anniversary Blind Bag variants – featuring new comic book art from an assortment of artists – They are 15 variant Covers with an assortment of color, virgin, black and white and trade dress variants. There were also 1:100 “secret” variants. Here is a run down of some of the more note worthy variants and what they’re currently selling for.
For Walking Dead #19 – retailers were offered a J. Scott Campbell variant Cover. Since J. Scott Campbell has a large audience of fans many stores ordered this book. There are five versions of this variant two of the more noteworthy are the 1:100 pencil sketch virgin variant and the black and white virgin inked variant – these two books have been getting a lot of attention online. The Black and White Inked Virgin variant has been selling for $45 to $60 – and the 1:100 Pencil Sketch Variant has been selling for $150 to $250.
Walking Dead #48 has a Chris Burnham Variant. Along with the Black and White, Color, and two virgin covers – this book has a “secret” word variant. Along with a full color virgin variant, randomly inserted in the blind bags, is a full color virgin variant with the word “Ka-Sladdittt” on the top portion of the cover. This book has been selling for $100 to $120.
Walking Dead #98 also has “secret” word variant. This Wes Craig blind bag cover variant series has a full color virgin variant with the word “Thok” on it. There have been a handful of sales around the $120 level.
Walking Dead #100 has a secret word bubble variant. This randomly inserted blind bag variant features the full color virgin variant, with a different background color, featuring Negan talking. This is the only version of the variant to feature word bubbles. This book has multiple sales online around $150.
For the Walking Dead #108 Emma Rios variant – there was a randomly inserted 1:100 chance pencil sketch variant. This book has two sales at $150.
When Skybound Comics announced Oblivion Song #1 we started to see speculation that we might see a pink signature chase variant. Skybound has done this twice previously with Walking Dead #171 and Redneck #6 and both of these were done by Oblivion Song artist Lorenzo De Felici. This week pink signature copies of Oblivion Song started popping up online in facebook selling groups and on ebay. Right now there are two copies on ebay, one is $250 Buy it now and the other is $200 buy it now.
Where did these come from?
Skybound Comics offered the pink signature variant as a buying incentive at their booth last weekend at the Wondercon Comic Convention. Anyone that purchased items at the Skybound booth above $25 received a copy of this variant. Skybound will be set up at several conventions over the next few months, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to check to see if they are still offering copies.
Skybound Comics will be set up at C2E2 and SDCC just to name two.
Oblivion Song is a new on-going series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Skybound Comics. Any time Robert Kirkman has a new series out there is usually a lot of hype behind it, the last time Kirkman released a new on-going series, Thief of Thieves, first prints sold out at the distributor level and the book was quickly “optioned” by AMC studios. Keeping all of this in mind, the new Kirkman series Oblivion Song is one to be thinking about. The first issue of the series is released in March.
This week Skybound sent retailers a trade paperback edition of Oblivion Song. This trade features the first four issues of the Oblivion Song series in print. This is so Skybound can increase interest in the series and get retailers to increase their orders. This trade paperback was first given out at New York Comic Con’s Skybound retailer conference making the trade paperback the first appearance of the series. I did read the trade paperback a few months ago and I highly recommend this series. Now is the time to be asking your local comic book store what they are doing with there copy. If Oblivion Song blows up like every other creator owned Robert Kirkman series, this is a book you will want to be holding on to long term.
One other thing to note, on release there will be a limited to 1000 deluxe collectors edition of Oblivion Song, this comes with a statue and a foil edition comic – this item will be allocated and will sell out. Now is a good time to be putting preorders in for this item.
It is also worth noting that the new image comic, Ice Cream Man #1, which was released this week has steadily been selling for $10+ online. This is an anthology book, where each issue is supposed to be a one-shot, so new readers can jump on at any point.
I’m going to do a post about the things I missed last week tomorrow, so be on the look out for that.
At C2E2 Over the weekend it was announced that Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s Revival is being adapted into a film by Shattlerglass Films. A Teaser was shown. As a result Revival #1s have started to sell again! Two things to keep note of, the Revival #1 Sketch edition only has 500 copies and is a great book to be looking for and holding on to, The first appearance of Revival is Image 2012 Free Comic Book Day Edition book.
Skybound / Image Comics released THREE retailer appreciation books this week that you should be asking your retailer about. The first is the Kill the Minotaur Ashcan. This is a one per store ashcan and is the first published appearance of this series and characters, its a very large book that reprints the entire issue in black and white in the ashcan size.
The other two books Image released are reprints of Redneck #1, one is the Black and White Cover A with Silver Foil Logo and the other is a Cover A with Gold Foil logo. While these books together have sold online in presale for up to $250, these books are currently selling for $40 each. Since these books are given to every store with a diamond account that ordered the book there will be a lot of copies out there this week.
If you want to speculate on Redneck the book you should be buying is the ashcan. This book came out before issue #1 and is the TRUE first appearance of the series and characters – this book can be purchased on ebay for $40 to $50, which is a steal when you consider the high price sales of the gold and silver foil variants.
Another book to be on the lookout for tomorrow is ‘Namwolf #1. Springing from the success of Hillbilly, ‘Namwolf is another series published by Eric Powell’s Albatross Legacy Books, this book has two covers and both covers have multiple sales above cover. There is no ratio variant just a cover A and B.
